Over 10 million tons of textile waste goes into U.S. landfills each year.

That's one of the reasons some people choose thrift shopping, said the authors of "ThriftStyle: The Ultimate Bargain Shopper's Guide to Smart Fashion."

"I think the whole concept of actually owning clothes is changing. We're just starting to see this. This is the beginning of this phenomenon, but I think we are going to hear more about this in the years to come," said Allison Engel, who co-wrote "ThriftStyle."

Another benefit of thrift shopping is the ability to save money, the authors said.

"I think the biggest savings though comes in the fact that you can actually get very well-made, quality clothes for inexpensive and that's what we wanted to focus on in the book, which is focus on quality, focus on those things that really are well made, that are made out of great materials, your cashmeres, you know, your wools and all of that stuff, so it's a really big bargain in that way," co-author Reise Moore said.

Engel and Moore will be at the Carlsbad Library, 1775 Dove Lane, on Saturday at 2 p.m. for an interactive event, book talk and Q&A. The event is free but seating is limited. Organizers advise arriving one hour prior. More information can be found at adventuresbythebook.com.

Engel and Moore join Midday Edition on Wednesday with their thrift shopping tips.
