Transcript

In 2013, UC San Diego graduate Alicia Garza co-founded Black Lives Matter in the wake of the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who shot and killed 17-year old Trayvon Martin.

Five years later, the movement has gone global.

"One of the things we're really excited about is that the movement has expanded. We are an actual organization that has 40 chapters in four countries across the globe and we're a part of a larger ecosystem of black-led organizations that are fighting to change conditions in our communities and taking on some of the biggest challenges that black communities face today," said Garza.

Garza, who now serves as the special projects director for the National Domestic Workers Alliance, will return to San Diego this week as part of UC San Diego's Black History Month celebration.

She weighs in on the state of the social justice movement Tuesday on Midday Edition.
