The San Diego Unified School District begins its return to in-person instruction, police reform is part of Mayor Todd Gloria's Black empowerment plan, and pushback to an inewsource investigation into complaints about a local COVID-19 shelter.

Back-To-School For San Diego Unified

After more than a year, the San Diego Unified School District welcomed students back to campus this week. While it’s still short of the full-time schedule, this is the first large scale reopening for the county’s largest school district. We check in with KPBS education reporter Joe Hong to see how the first few days are going, and the work that still needs to be done.

Mayor Todd Gloria’s Plan For Police Reform

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria is pushing for a series of reforms for local policing. This comes amid another deadly police shooting this week following an overnight standoff at San Diego High School. Policing is also back in the national headlines with a deadly shooting of a man near Minneapolis, just miles from the ongoing Derek Chauvin trial. Voice of San Diego managing editor Sara Libby joins us to talk about the mayor’s proposal, and the work being done on this issue at the state level.

COVID-19 Hotel Shelter Singles Out Investigative Reporters

Flyers for two inewsource reporters are circulating at Mission Valley’s Crowne Plaza hotel. It’s the latest development in an investigation into alleged unsafe conditions at the site, which is being used as a COVID-19 isolation center by the county. A review of the site, which is being run by an independent contractor, was ordered by the county after the initial reporting by inewsource. Cody Dulaney joins us to talk about the new developments in this story, and what it’s like to be a wanted man.
