If anyone has been craving a dose of "Conan the Barbarian" then you might be interested in the new film adaptation of the video game "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" (opening May 28, 2010) and starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
Okay remember Arnold in the "Conan" movie? Lots of exposed flesh, ripe dialogue, and swordplay. Well this "Prince of Persia" makes me think it could be the "Conan" for the new millennium. Having Jerry Bruckheimer as the producer doesn't exactly inspire confidence. But the film has a real director in Mike Newell, who did "Dance with a Stranger" and "Donnie Brasco" among others. And Jake Gyllenhaal and Ben Kingsley are actors who have displayed considerable talent. So what the heck are they doing adapting this video game to the big screen? Hopefully it's to raise the bar on these video game film adaptations but I fear it's more likely to be that they are all taking a big paycheck. The film could be a fun adventure fantasy if it's done in the right spirit but we'll have to wait till next year to find out. Trailer is courtesy of Walt Disney.
