The Broadcast Film Critics Association gave out their Critics Choice Awards tonight and the big winners were "The Hurt Locker" and "Avatar."
As a fan of Kathryn Bigelow I was thrilled to see her win the Best Director Award. It was also amusing because she and her film beat out her ex (James Cameron) and his film ("Avatar") for the top two prizes: Best Director and Best Picture. Bigelow made the worst film of her career ("Blue Steel") while married to Cameron, and her best films ("Near Dark," "The Hurt Locker") before and after her marriage to him. I just say this as an observation. But kudos to her, she deserves the prize.
The other surprise of the evening is the tie for Best Actress between Meryl Streep ("Julie and Julia") and "Sandra Bullock ("The Blind Side").
Of course what everyone is really wondering right now is if these awards are a foreshadowing of either the Golden Globes or the Oscars. In the case of Bigelow and "The Hurt Locker" I sure hope so!
