Scorsese's New Film Gets Thumbs Up From Teen

“Shutter Island" (opened February 19 throughout San Diego), directed by Martin Scorsese, is a story about a man trying to investigate the disappearance of a missing patient from Boston’s Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a U.S. Marshall who while trying to figure out where the patient could be starts to notice some odd things going on in the hospital. He feels as though they are coming after him too, and that they’re making him believe he’s going insane.

Scorsese did an amazing job with this film. The music in the beginning was intense and it felt like the music was coming right out of the scene on screen. Scorsese has had Leonardo DiCaprio in his other films such as “The Departed” and “Gangs of New York.” I think the director has really helped DiCaprio grow as an actor, and he definitely flaunts his acting skills in this movie.

There were scenes in the film where objects that were obviously there, weren’t actually visible. It was a trip! One of the patients asks for a glass of water and as she is about to drink it the glass isn’t there, but once she goes to set it down the glass is there and it is empty. The setting was very dark and sinister. It perfectly matched with the essence of the film.

The only flaw in the movie is that you can only watch it once. I wouldn’t be able to sit there and watch it twice because I’d know what’s coming next and the mystery of not knowing what’s really happening is the best part of this film. Other than that “Shutter Island” is astonishing; one of those movies that really makes you think.
