Sixteen people allegedly tied to Mexico's Sinaloa Drug Cartel have been indicted in Imperial County. The group supposedly trafficked hundreds of pounds of drugs into the United States.
California's Attorney General Jerry Brown says the group smuggled the drugs through the Calexico border crossing.
He says they'd hide the cocaine and marijuana in secret compartments inside vehicles. The smugglers reportedly used a specially equipped cargo truck to distribute more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine to Canada every month.
"They come across here at the border with California, but they keep on going. This stuff is destined for Canada, for Northern California. What we're doing is not only defending Southern California but protecting the people of Canada and the whole country."
U.S. authorities say the Sinaloa Cartel has controlled the smuggling corridor between Mexicali and Calexico for the last few years. The cartel was supposedly involved in the violent war with Tijuana's Arellano Felix Cartel last year.
