Officials are catching more people who are fleeing from the law along California's border with Mexico.
U.S Customs and Border Protection officials say fugitive arrests were up 15 percent in 2011 compared with 2010.
Officers caught more 2,000 fugitives last year. That figure doesn't include about two dozen people who were taken into custody over the New Year's weekend.
Jackie Wasiluk, Public Information Officer with CBP said the increase in arrests could be attributed to several factors.
"For one, border security has really increased over the past couple of years. We also have a number of initiatives
and new technologies that help us identify people who are connected to illegal activity," she said.
Wasiluk added that some of those arrested were wanted for serious crimes, including kidnapping and murder.
