Arts Community To Brainstorm About S.D. Embarcadero

Representatives from the local dance, theater, music and art scenes will put their collective heads together Monday over San Diego's waterfront.

Developer David Malmuth wants the arts community to come up with some ways of using their talents to revitalize the Embarcadero. He envisions performances or art installations drawing people to the area.

Malmuth said the effort could be integrated with proposed ideas and ongoing projects at the waterfront, such as the cruise ship terminal being built on Broadway Pier.

"Let's figure out a way that we can start to claim it more into the public realm," he said. "Obviously this needs the Port to participate. But I think if there's a lot of interest and desire by the arts community to utilize the building I think the Port will respond positively."

Malmuth said from the meeting he'd like to put together a programming plan for the Embarcadero. He said he anticipates announcing that plan at a local arts conference in September.
