San Diego State University received more than 60,000 undergraduate applications for the fall 2011 semester, a 2 percent drop from a year ago, but still the third-highest total ever, it was announced today.
The school also allowed spring applications for the first time in two years, and received nearly 8,000 applications for spring 2011, which could account for the drop in fall applications.
The applications received last month for fall 2011 came from 44,623 prospective freshmen and 16,946 upper-division transfer students.
"SDSU continues to be a first-choice university for applicants, and for good reason," said Ethan Singer, SDSU associate vice president for academic affairs. "The quality of students attending SDSU is the best it's ever been, the faculty and staff are committed to providing students with a top-notch university education and SDSU offers a dynamic student experience as well as career opportunities in some of the most high-demand fields in our economy."
It is unknown how many students will be accepted next fall because of uncertainties regarding state funding.
More than 3,400 freshmen began school during the current semester, along with more than 2,400 transfers.
SDSU is is accepting about 3,000 undergraduates for the spring 2011 semester.
Statewide, the California State University System received 611,000 applications.
