All of the first graders at Logan Elementary School in Logan Heights got brand new bicycles and helmets for Christmas this year.
The pint-sized students were surprised on Wednesday morning with new bikes and helmets at a school assembly.
Sitting quietly with legs crossed on the auditorium floor, 91 first graders were told to close their eyes. The blue velvety curtains parted, then on the count of three, the announcement was made.
“Open your eyes — look, new bikes for everyone!”
It took a few seconds for the stunned first graders to realize the rows of brightly colored bikes on stage were for them. As the shrieks and applause died down, high pitched voices were simultaneously saying:
“I want the red one, I like purple, I want pink, I love Pink!”
The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) donated the colorful two-wheelers.
For the last six years, MTS employees have donated bikes and helmets to a needy school near trolley stops in San Diego.
Joe Martinez, supervisor for MTS, said the giveaway is part of a go-green transportation and safety program done by MTS and the San Diego Police department at local schools.
“We want to educate them about public transportation, going green and riding safely, but really the best part is just seeing their little eyes light up when they see the new bikes,” said Martinez.
Asia Robinson, age 6-and-a-half, immediately jumped on her white-wheeled pink and purple bike with sparkling handlebar streamers.
“It’s my favorite colors,” Asia said softly.
Her mother Inga was on hand to take the new bike home with a thankful smile.
“God blessed us definitely in a beautiful way,” said Inga.
From the cushioned pink seat of her new bike, Asia spoke louder this time, telling everyone who passed by:
“Merry Christmas!”
