More than half of eighth-grade students in California are performing poorly in science. That's based on a national assessment referred to as the "Nation's Report Card.”
The test given to fourth, eighth, and 12th-grade students in various subjects in every state. It is seen as a common yardstick for measuring student achievement nationwide.
This time students were tested in science. The results show 52 percent of California’s eighth-grade students scored below basic in the subject. Fourth-grade students scored at a basic level.
Analysts say the findings also indicate far too many students nationwide don't have the skills needed to pursue science and technology careers.
That suggests America's ability to create the next generation of science leaders is in serious danger.
