San Diego Unified School District financial staff will ask Board of Education members today to approve proposed layoffs to close a projected budget shortfall for the next school year that could hit $122 million.
Trustees will consider a plan that calls for laying off around 1,200 employees, including 800 or so teachers who would no longer be necessary because of increased class sizes.
More than 90 percent of the district's general fund expenses are personnel costs. The school board has largely tried to avoid layoffs in past years.
According to a report to be presented to the board members, the projected shortfall for the next school year is $81 million, but that figure will rise to $122 million if Gov. Jerry Brown's proposed tax hikes are not approved. The numbers grow substantially in following years whether or not the tax plan passes.
