Audits released today of payroll and purchasing at San Diego High Complex schools show thousands of dollars paid in unauthorized or undocumented overtime and ongoing misappropriations of funds.
A statement from Superintendent Bill Kowba said these are part of the San Diego Unified School District’s routine audit process to review funds and time and labor accounting at the six small high schools on the San Diego High School campus. The audits found more than $180,000 of undocumented or improper overtime and other pay at each of those schools.
The audits also found tens of thousands of dollars in purchases that were not supported with the proper receipts or that violated district policies.
Audits of the Associated Student Body finances found thousands of dollars in unauthorized or improper purchases and that campus facilities were being improperly rented to non-school district organizations. They also found that about $180,000 from rentals that should have gone into district accounts went into ASB and other accounts.
The audits say that corrective action has been taken or planned in most cases. But the findings of these audits have been sent to the Board of Education and the District Audit and Finance Committee, which could recommend or take action in the future.
"As superintendent, I am concerned about the lack of compliance with district policies that is identified in these audits," said Kowba in a statement. "All recommendations made to address the audit findings will be implemented and monitored for compliance."
