More than 170 teens and young adults from throughout California will gather in Chula Vista today to learn what it takes to be a firefighter.
The annual California Fire Exploring Academy, which is hosted by the Chula Vista Fire Department, runs through Saturday, according to event spokesman Charles Kuniyoshi.
At 5 a.m., participants ages 16-21 will gather at Hilltop High School for morning line up, uniform inspections and breakfast before they set out for various training events designed to give them a realistic view of what it's like to be a firefighter.
Training event topics range from how to fight live fire to how to free someone who is trapped in a wrecked vehicle.
The cost for the academy is $300 per explorer and includes training and food and lodging, according to the CFEA's website.
