Maureen Cavanaugh: This year, our national environmental celebration of Earth Day turns 40 years old, and this Sunday our own EarthFair in Balboa Park celebrates its 20th anniversary. The fact that milestones are being reached in 2009 is fitting, as many environmentalists say we're now at a tipping point in the greening of America.
Green businesses that offer new sustainable energy products and services are popping up even during the national recession. This Sunday's EarthFair boasts 400 exhibitors, almost half of them new to the fair this year.
But the beginning of a truly green economy hinges on how many individual Americans are willing to get on board, discard some old ways of doing things and open up to a new environmental reality.
EarthFair 2009 is Sunday, April 19, 2009, from 10am - 5pm in Balboa Park.
Guests
Andrew McAllister, director of programs at the California Center for Sustainable Energy.
Carolyn Chase, founder of the San Diego Earthworks, the non-profit producer of the San Diego EarthFair.
