San Diego Gas and Electric ratepayers will see bill reductions next month following a court settlement for the costs of closing the now-defunct San Onofre nuclear power plant, the utility announced Monday.
“We’re happy to reach the final chapter in the SONGS settlement and provide these savings for our customers,” said Dan Skopec, SDG&E’s vice president of regulatory affairs, in a written statement.

SDG&E said that the bill reductions will begin October 1, with customers seeing a one-month refund of about $14 for the average residential customer. There will also be an ongoing average bill reduction of about $1.32 per month.
Initially, customers had been stuck with covering 70 percent of the nearly $5 billion cost of closing the nuclear power plant. A lawsuit filed on behalf of ratepayers against power plant owners Southern California and Edison and SDG&E resulted in a settlement that reduced closure costs to consumers by $775 million.
