Dozens braved the rain on Monday in the Lincoln Park area to participate in the third annual guns-for-food-gift-cards exchange. The event is sponsored by the United African-American Ministerial Action Council of San Diego.
The goal exchange is to get unwanted firearms off the street – no questions asked -- and reduce gun-related violence. About 150 guns were turned in.
Robert Robinson, director of resource development for the council, called the exchange a tremendous success.
"We think it was very successful … we gave out about 150 gift cards, and we turned away more."
Handguns could be exchanged for $100 gift cards while assault rifles were worth a $200 gift card. Robinson said the San Diego police destroy the guns.
According to Robinson, more people came to turn in guns than last year. The gift cards were donated by individuals and businesses.
