Animated Film Tells Life Story of Pope John Paul II

Pope John Paul II is the subject of a new animated film intended to teach children about the life of the late pontiff. The movie, called John Paul II: The Friend of All Humanity, was unveiled Tuesday at the Vatican.

The story, which starts with the death of the pope, is told by a talking pen, a diary named Matteo and two snow-white birds. The 30-minute cartoon has been made in eight languages and will be released only on DVD in time for the Christmas season.

J.L. Lopez-Guardia, an animator who worked on the project, says the aim is to present the human side of John Paul II.

"We thought animated characters could do it best," Lopez-Guardia says.
