An Australian college student has developed a basketball jersey that lights up to tell fans, players and coaches how many points and how many fouls individual players have. There's even room to count down the game clock and a shot clock.
University of Sydney student Mitchell Page developed the "wearable computing" jersey for his honors project. He says it's mainly for sports fans who may need a bit of coaching.
"There's always people that go to these games who don't understand the dynamics of the game and why people get fouled or who are the best players," Page says. "So, for the spectators to be able to see that and see which players are winning and which are fouling and see why that's happening, they'll be able to enjoy it more"
Page says his jersey worked well during research tests with real players, referees and spectators.
He says the added information on the floor influenced the game: helping players decide, for example, which hot shooter should get the ball.
Page foresees American football, rugby and soccer players using his jerseys in the not-too- distant future. One sport he doesn't think will be affected by his research: golf.
