Rail workers in Germany have extended a strike for better pay to include passenger services, a move that threatens to disrupt the travel plans of millions of people. Starting Thursday, both rail and passenger services of the state rail operator face massive disruption.
Although the action is likely to cost the German economy hundreds of millions of dollars, it enjoys considerable public support: Many Germans think the rail company is playing hardball with the unions to prepare for privatization, a move many people in Germany oppose.
