Starting next year, California residents will be able to register to vote on Election Day.

That's thanks to the state's new voter database that was certified for use on Monday.

Same-day registration will not be available for the November election, but will be available in next year's local elections.

San Diego County Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said starting in 2017, same-day registrants will be able to cast provisional ballots that will then be verified after the election.

He said the new database will also allow San Diego County to connect with the other counties in California and see their registered voters.

Vu said already voters who send in mail ballots can look online to ensure their ballots are counted. With the new database, voters from across the state can check on their ballots.

The deadline to register to vote in the November election is Oct. 24. You can register to vote online.
