A report on Iraq's progress in meeting benchmarks is providing ammunition for both critics and supporters of President Bush's strategy in the country. Democrats in the Senate say the president is out of touch. In the House, they move toward a vote on a bill to withdraw troops by next spring.
Democrats like Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois pounced on the report's finding that there was no clear progress toward meeting more than half of the benchmarks. Durbin said it was evidence the president's policy is failing.
Senate Majority leader Harry Reid said the report confirmed that the war in Iraq is "headed in a dangerous direction."
