New U.S. Economic Data Due Out Soon

The government this week will release information on retail sales, jobless claims and inflation. The data will give Americans a clearer sense of whether a recession has already begun.

Experts say we're likely to learn that more Americans have been losing jobs and cutting down on spending and that despite this, prices keep going up.

The economy had been chugging along in 2007, and then in August, the first signs of the subprime credit crisis were apparent. Since Christmas, it's become clearer and clearer that we're in a broad economic downturn. And inflation keeps going up.
