Sen. Stevens Wins Alaska's GOP Primary

RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

Politics in Alaska have gotten a lot of attention lately because of long-time Senator Ted Stevens' troubles. Yesterday he easily won the Republican primary, despite the fact that he's facing trial next month on charges stemming from a quarter of a million dollar renovation of his house - paid for by oil industry executives along with other gifts.

In Florida politics, Tom Rooney, a lawyer and former Army officer won the Republican primary for the seat previously held by Congressman Mark Foley. Foley resigned after sexually suggestive messages that he sent to teenage congressional pages were made public. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
