The California Supreme Court will release its decision tomorrow on the constitutionality of Proposition 8, the ballot measure banning same sex marriage.
San Diego sponsors played a leading role in funding Proposition 8 which passed with 52 percent of the vote last November. But the initiative banning same sex marriage was immediately challenged as unconstitutional. Tomorrow morning, the state’s highest court will reveal its decision.
Stephen Whitburn, of the group Marriage Equality USA, says supporters of gay marriage plan to be out in force tomorrow, whatever happens.
" Good or bad," he says," Tuesday will be an historic day, and win or lose there will be a march and rally in San Diego Tuesday evening."
The State Supreme Court had ruled that an earlier initiative, Prop 22, was unconstitutional. That measure sought to limit marriage to a man and a woman. Eighteen thousand same sex couples wedded following the court decision and before voters passed Prop 8.
Five states have now legalized same sex marriage.
