U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein praised the joint effort by the U.S. and Mexico to crack down on drug cartels after meeting with officials from both sides of the border in San Diego Wednesday. As KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson tells us Feinstein says there's still a lot of work to do.
Senator Feinstein says the bi-national effort to crack down on drug cartels is unprecedented.
She says she came away from the briefing by local, state and federal officials with some good ideas, including cracking down on gangs that distribute drugs in the US.
"What I learned today is that lot of this is orchestrated right out of our prisons," she says. "I will be looking into that more deeply and doing much more about it."
In order to help control gun trafficking south to Mexico, Feinstein says she'll work to make sure US gun sellers notify federal officials when someone buys multiple rifles and shotguns, and not just hand guns.
Feinstein's visit comes as US officials work to make good on their promise to fight drug cartels together with Mexico.
Since President Barak Obama took office, US officials have acknowlege that the US shares responsibility in the drug war.
