San Diego was awarded $16.2 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for emergency preparedness and anti- terrorism efforts, it was announced today.
The DHS awarded $798.6 million to 62 metropolitan areas through its Urban Areas Security Initiative, or UASI.
Last year, San Diego was awarded $15.5 million in UASI grants.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano today announced nearly $1.8 billion in Federal Emergency Management Agency preparedness grants, which included the UASI funding.
"These grants provide direct support for regional preparedness, urban security and medical response efforts in communities across the country," Napolitano said.
San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders was scheduled to hold a news conference this afternoon to discuss how the city will spend the UASI grant funds.
