The City of San Diego is near the top of a federal agency list for using green power to generate electricity.
San Diego ranked third on an Environmental Protection Agency list because the city generates a relatively high percentage of renewable energy.
The city uses biogas, small-hydro and solar to generate 27 percent of the electricity it consumes.
San Diego is one of nearly 1,200 organizations in the EPA's Green Power Partnership. Green power is generated from renewable sources such as solar, wind and geothermal.
Blaine Collison, the director of the EPA's Green Power Partnership, says "It is certainly a win-win for both kinds of green, both the financial and the environmental."
San Diego is also one of eight California organizations on the top-20 list.
Collison says those 20 partners combined are producing enough green energy to power more than 61,000 homes a year.
Green power electricity generates less pollution than conventional power and produces no net increase in greenhouse gas emissions.
