The California Assembly has passed a resolution urging the federal government to fix an immigration system some lawmakers say is broken.
The resolution passed Thursday on a 43-21, party-line vote. Majority Democrats supported it, while Republicans were opposed.
It arose as criticism of Arizona intensifies after that state passed a law requiring state and local law enforcement officers to check the citizenship of anyone they believe might be in the country illegally.
Opponents of the resolution say it's the country's right to protect its borders from unlawful entry. They say the wording of the resolution also encourages amnesty for illegal immigrants.
The resolution now moves to the Senate.
