The city of Del Mar is looking for unique ways to build more affordable housing. One option it is exploring is creating housing at the state-owned Del Mar Fairgrounds.
Fairgrounds CEO Tim Fennell said he is open to discussing the possibility of creating affordable housing there. He said there are fairgrounds staff that could potentially benefit from the low-income housing.
Former Del Mar mayor, now Council Member Dwight Worden first brought up the idea. He said it is not a fix-all solution for the city, but could help in creating some additional units.

There is a recreational-vehicle lot as well as a couple other locations on the fairgrounds that are being floated as options to be converted into affordable housing. Fennell said right now they are in the early stages of discussing the idea.
At November's 22nd District Agricultural Association Board of Directors meeting, board president Steve Shewmakers referred the idea to the board's Strategic Planning Committee.
