The Mexican Amy says it freed six men in Tijuana early Wednesday morning and detained a man and a woman who allegedly held the group captive. However, the army shared few details about the case.
At the military base in Tijuana, soldiers showed off a 36-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman and contraband including a gun, 98 bullets and a 10 pound brick of marijuana.
Mexican army officials revealed that an anonymous tip led soldiers to a home where they found the goods, the people and the six captives.
An army spokesman would not answer questions about who the six people are. He would not confirm if they'd been kidnapped because the investigation is ongoing.
The army also announced it arrested three California men in unrelated incidents. Soldiers detained a 59-year-old Sacramento man with a gun and silencer at a highway checkpoint in Popotla, near Rosarito. An 18 and 23-year-old were stopped near the Algodones border crossing. The suspects allegedly had nine bullets and a magazine.
The Mexican Army is one of Mexican President Felipe Calderon's principle weapons in the war on drugs that he launched three years ago.
