A majority of Californians consider distracted driving to be one of the biggest problems on the state’s roadways. The California Office of Traffic Safety conducted its first face-to-face statewide survey on driving safety issues.
Chris Cochran is the assistant director of the office.
“When we asked people what was the most distracted driving, they said overwhelmingly that talking on cell phones whether its hands held or hands free is the most serious distraction,” Cochran said. “Nearly 60 percent said that.”
Cochran said more than half of all drivers say they’ve been hit or nearly hit by someone talking or texting on a cell phone. The same percent of people said they never use a cell phone while driving, even if it’s hands-free.
He said speeding and aggressive driving are also big safety concerns among the people surveyed.
Driving under the influence is also considered to be a major problem on California roadways.
