Found dead in his Tijuana apartment 10 days ago, Acejo was stabbed multiple times.

Ondine Massot, Acejo’s close friend and colleague for seven years, says Acejo lived in Tijuana so he could send extra money to his family every month.

Massot said she’s getting few details from Mexican authorities. She said Acejo was a trusting person who had been targeted before.

“His own roommate stole his laptop and TV, and (Acejo) found them in a pawnshop. When he kicked out that roommate, (Acejo) got beat up the following night,” Massot said.

A special fund is established to pay for Acejo’s funeral expenses.

Students have also set-up a Facebook page in memory of their teacher called “Celebrating the Life of Professor Henry Acejo.”

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
