A young man who called police, saying he shot a family member in Escondido, was arrested at Palomar College Tuesday in an apparent suicide-by-cop attempt.
The suspect called 911 about 6:30 a.m. and was arrested about an hour later, according to San Diego County Sheriff's deputies.
Sheriff's Sgt. Paul Michalke said no victims could be found in Escondido and, according to sheriff's spokeswoman Melissa Aquino, the caller said he wanted to get into a shootout with deputies.
The campus was sealed off -- it was closed for winter break -- as deputies searched for the man, who was arrested without a struggle after giving deputies a description of himself, Michalke said.
He had a loaded, small-caliber handgun, the deputies said.
Mental illness may be a factor, according to the sergeant.
