Traditional Holiday Oratorio Presented in San Diego Bach Collegium San Diego (BCSD), one of the country’s leading baroque ensembles, is presenting Handel’s great oratorio "Messiah" this holiday season in San Diego and the Pacific Palisades. The oratorio will spring to life by way of the fruitful collaboration of Charles Jennens’ carefully conceived libretto and Handel’s supreme skill as a composer of the theatre. BCSD’s performance of "Messiah," delivered by a dynamic cast in the manner of Handel’s dramatic operas, has become one of its crown jewels. Soloists Estelí Gomez, soprano Jay Carter, countertenor Jacob Perry, Michael Jones, tenors Jonathan Woody, bass Handel composed "Messiah" in a breathtakingly swift 24 days. "Messiah" was originally conceived as a work for Easter, and its premiere was during Lent at the Music Hall on Fishamble Street, Dublin on April 13, 1742. The performance was offered as a charity event for the relief of prisoners, support for Mercer's Hospital, and aid for the Charitable Infirmary. There is a long-standing myth that King George II was so touched by the “Hallelujah” chorus that he rose to his feet with the crowd following. It’s impossible to confirm the truth of this legend, since this was first recorded in 1780, almost 40 years later! Audiences today routinely stand during the “Hallelujah” chorus, as a tip of the hat to this legend. BCSD is beginning an annual tradition of performing Handel’s "Messiah" in San Diego so it can become a part of locals’ holiday tradition. Often called the "Oscars of the comics industry," Comic-Con hosts the 37th annual Eisner Awards on Friday, celebrating top comics creators and titles across 32 categories.

Join us in Encinitas for even more ways to interact with contemporary art! Weekly Wellness Saturdays at ICA San Diego / North expands on our 2025-2026 exhibition season theme, "On Healing." The exhibitions are part of a year-long exploration of the ways artists address the various socio-cultural wounds revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, the associated programs and events seek to explore how art can serve as a vital tool for mental, physical, emotional, and community wellbeing. Weekly Wellness Saturdays will take place most Saturdays throughout the year during ICA San Diego’s open hours (Noon – 5 p.m.), and includes: 1–2 p.m.: A rotating healing session hosted by a local facilitator 2:15–3:15 p.m.: A complimentary tour of the current exhibition in its Lower and Upper Pavilions, the outdoor garden, and Sculpture Trail 3:30–4:30 p.m.: A rotating healing session hosted by a local facilitator 12–5 p.m.: An all ages art-making activity related to this year’s "On Healing" season 12–5 p.m.: Complimentary admission to ICA / North’s exhibitions Admission to Weekly Wellness Saturdays at ICA / North is free, and a donation will be suggested for healing activities, and made directly to the facilitator. Join us for SOULscape, a movement-based healing and communal practice led by the Soultry Sisters Arts + Wellness Collective. The session will include mindful movement meditation incorporating breathing, visualization, and creative movement, as well as journaling and collective reflection. Learn to Warp & Weave! Saturday, September 20, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. (1 hour lunch) Learn the ancient fiber craft of weaving your own fabric using a Rigid Heddle Loom and natural fibers. In his hands-on workshop, Weaver & Dyer Jeanine Ertl will teach you everything you need to know to warp and weave on your own. This class is perfect for anyone who’s been curious about weaving beyond a lap loom and wants to learn the warping and weaving processes. We’ll dive into fiber & fabric and demystify the process of getting set up (otherwise known as warping a loom), weaving, and finally, finishing and removing a woven fiber good from the loom! And, you’ll go home with handwoven fabric in-hand. Length of the final piece will depend on the individual’s own pace. In this workshop you’ll learn how: a rigid heddle loom works; to plan a textile (e.g. sett, basic pattern & choosing fiber, etc.); to warp a rigid heddle; to weave; to remove your handwoven; and to finish a textile. All materials to warp & weave a sample included for use. If you’re interested in learning to warp and weave on your own rigid heddle loom, please email Instructor Jeanine Ertl advance. Tuesdays, September 9, 16, 23, from 6-8 p.m. Absolute Beginner Crochet: Getting Started! In this crochet workshop, students will learn the fundamental skills of crochet, including starting a project, basic stitches like single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), chain (ch) magic circle, and tying off. This three-week course will allow students to learn and practice the basics in-studio, practice at home, and then return with their questions and learn more. No experience necessary. Students are welcome to bring their own yarn and/or hook, but it is not necessary. We will be using size 4 yarn and between 4.00mm and 6.00mm crochet hooks. You don’t have to bring your own supplies but you are welcome to. All materials included.
