Oolong Presents “Sun Goin' Down” A Debut Solo Exhibition by 2025 UCSD MFA Graduate John Singletary June 6 to 25, 2025 This powerful body of work, four years in the making, introduces Singletary’s haunting, symbolic, and deeply personal paintings to the public for the first time. Singletary’s painting practice delves into memory and myth. Drawing from Biblical and Classical tales, Southern folklore, his family’s spiritual lineage, and the subconscious, the artist channels a visual language steeped in longing, pain, and transformation. His work explores themes of death, love, and fear, and reanimates the sacred and the subconscious through ritualized technique and iconographic reference. “My aim is to make paintings that create a separation from the self and its fears or desires, creating space for thinking.” In “Sun Goin' Down,” Singletary’s technique and process becomes part of the meaning. Through methods such as sgraffito, sfumato, sanding, and scraping, the surface of each canvas evokes a kind of resurrection—a cycle of death and rebirth in oil and pigment. “In moments where I render carefully, there is longing. In moments where I have sanded the canvas bare, a subconscious death has occurred.” Singletary explores Christianity as both salvation and trauma, magic and evil. His paintings pulse with the ghost-like presence of those who came before, and the spiritual residue of Southern Black life. “Painting is alive—a deity that brings the dead back to life and allows what is absent to appear present.” “Sun Goin’ Down” refuses easy categorization. The works are both confession and apparition, echo and invocation. Rich in symbolism yet elusive in narrative, these paintings ask to be felt more than explained. They speak in the language of dreams—where trauma is transfigured into image, and gesture becomes truth. Mission Fed ArtWalk – San Diego’s original fine art festival – will fill the streets of San Diego’s Little Italy district with more than 250 visual artists, four music stages, interactive art for families, food and fun, This year, the 41st annual event, Mission Fed ArtWalk is the largest and longest-running fine art festival in Southern California bringing a weekend-long celebration of arts and culture to San Diego’s Little Italy. The free annual festival attracts locals and visitors to San Diego’s Little Italy, giving all an opportunity to meet more than 250 local, national, and international artists, and purchase art directly from the artists. The event boasts artists from every medium of art, including painting, sculpture, glass work, photography, fine jewelry and more. Visions Museum of Textile Art (VMOTA), a non-profit organization that celebrates and advances contemporary quilting and textile art, proudly hosts its inaugural Threads of Time fundraiser event that will be held at its museum that is located in the Arts District Liberty Station. On Saturday, April 26, 2025, the public is invited to participate in this event which is more than just a fundraiser; it is an opportunity to come together as a community, experience the creativity of wearable art, and connect over shared stories, food, and laughter. The event will include the following: · A Wearable Art Show, featuring garments inspired by historical events and reimagined for modern expression. · A Hands-On Art Engagement, where community members can create and explore textile art firsthand. · A lively atmosphere of gathering over delicious food and drinks, fostering meaningful connections. · Silent and Live Auctions, showcasing a stunning collection of artwork, experiences, and exclusive items, all to support our goal of raising necessary funds to empower artists and sustain our mission. Jesus Christ Superstar is a 1973 American musical historical drama directed by Norman Jewison and co-written by Jewison and Melvyn Bragg. Based on the 1970 concept album by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, the film stars Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson, Yvonne Elliman, and Barry Dennen.
