Installation Exploration: Transforming Space Through Art (Ages 7 – 9) July 21 – 25, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Transform space, embody art, and leave your creative mark during this week of creative transformation. Explore the world of installation and performance art as you experiment with scale, collaboration, and innovation: Together, create a large-scale sculpture inspired by artists in the Museum’s collection. Dive into immersive video and sound installations using iPads, taking cues from the works of Sterling Ruby, Ed Ruscha, and Fox Maxy. Create wearable art and puppets inspired by Nick Cave and Mickalene Thomas, culminating in a collaborative performance piece. Schedule Day 1: Begin transforming the space around! Create puppets that either dangle from a string or become part of your hand and move in the space, while imagining their personality. Use digital and mixed media materials to create sculptures that will become part of your collective installation. On Alexandra Savior’s new album, "Beneath The Lilypad" (RCA Records)—a collection crafted over the past five years—the singer, songwriter, and musician takes listeners on an ethereal journey. Woven together through 11 lushly orchestrated songs, the album follows the last half- decade of Alexandra’s life, a time during which her sense of self and artistic identity came into question, allowing for a creative freedom driven entirely by instinct and the desire to make music wholly for herself. "Beneath The Lilypad" does not tread a linear path—its arc does not follow an artist from difficult times to fully healed. “Because that’s not how life goes, and that’s certainly not been true of my journey,” she says with a laugh. “I wanted the tracking of this album to really reflect that: life is up and down. "Access" is a group exhibition featuring material and conceptual works by multidisciplinary artists Carolina Danu, Yena Kim, Nanzi Muro, and Gabrielle Berens. "Access" includes MFA students from San Diego State University who believe in the need for diversity in the arts. Through printmaking, textiles, ceramics, digital graphics, illustrations, paintings, and woven sculpture, the selected works celebrate the evolving practices of these emerging artists and will serve to inspire the possibilities of material expression. The title of the exhibition, "Access," represents access to arts education, access to facilities, access to community, as well as access to expression through a variety of media and materials. San Diego Civic Youth Ballet presents the 17th Annual "Fairy Tales in the Park" at the Casa del Prado Theater in Balboa Park on August 16 & 17. A whimsical, interactive dance experience for families and audiences of all ages, this beloved tradition is directed by SDCYB Artistic Director Danika Pramik-Holdaway and narrated by a professional storyteller. "Fairy Tales in the Park" features interactive activities including an enchanted forest in the lobby, a chance to meet the dancers following the performance, and more.
