Oolong Presents “Sun Goin' Down” A Debut Solo Exhibition by 2025 UCSD MFA Graduate John Singletary June 6 to 25, 2025 This powerful body of work, four years in the making, introduces Singletary’s haunting, symbolic, and deeply personal paintings to the public for the first time. Singletary’s painting practice delves into memory and myth. Drawing from Biblical and Classical tales, Southern folklore, his family’s spiritual lineage, and the subconscious, the artist channels a visual language steeped in longing, pain, and transformation. His work explores themes of death, love, and fear, and reanimates the sacred and the subconscious through ritualized technique and iconographic reference. “My aim is to make paintings that create a separation from the self and its fears or desires, creating space for thinking.” In “Sun Goin' Down,” Singletary’s technique and process becomes part of the meaning. Through methods such as sgraffito, sfumato, sanding, and scraping, the surface of each canvas evokes a kind of resurrection—a cycle of death and rebirth in oil and pigment. “In moments where I render carefully, there is longing. In moments where I have sanded the canvas bare, a subconscious death has occurred.” Singletary explores Christianity as both salvation and trauma, magic and evil. His paintings pulse with the ghost-like presence of those who came before, and the spiritual residue of Southern Black life. “Painting is alive—a deity that brings the dead back to life and allows what is absent to appear present.” “Sun Goin’ Down” refuses easy categorization. The works are both confession and apparition, echo and invocation. Rich in symbolism yet elusive in narrative, these paintings ask to be felt more than explained. They speak in the language of dreams—where trauma is transfigured into image, and gesture becomes truth. The San Dieguito Art Guild, a non-profit group, hosts their 28th annual Mother’s Day Weekend Art, Garden & Studio Tour. This is a self-guided, driving tour on Saturday and Sunday, Mother’s Day weekend, May 10 and 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Tickets are good for both days and homes may be re-visited. Take your mom or best friends on a leisurely tour of the 8 North San Diego County homes where you can peruse more than 30 unique exhibits of locally made art, and relax in each unique coastal or inland garden. Artists from the San Dieguito Art Guild will be positioned in the gardens — showing and selling their paintings, ceramics, glass, gourd art, fiber arts, photography, jewelry, and much more. Free refreshments will be served at every stop. The year’s tour includes an eclectic group of eight homes, gardens, and art studios including a garden that has been almost 50 years in the making, an outdoor kitchen/bar, a chicken coop, a vineyard with several varieties of grape vines, a patio area with a spiral stair case, a lawn that was torn out and replaced with special tiles made on site by the hosts, a beautiful view of the ocean, a meticulously tended rose garden, a built-in wine cellar, a serene babbling brook, and twin stag horn ferns. This two-day event is the major fund-raiser of the year for the San Dieguito Art Guild. Without funds from this tour the Guild would operate at a loss. Tickets are $35 per person and may be purchased at the Off Track Gallery (937 South Coast Highway 101, Suite C-103, Encinitas), at each home both days of the tour. Ticket sales begin in early April. Well behaved children 17 and under are free. This is a favorite tour of many San Diegans — many of whom take this tour year after year. In keeping with their Mission Statement, “The San Dieguito Art Guild is an organization dedicated to furthering artistic understanding and fostering artistic growth of members and the community at large by promoting interest, education, knowledge and skills in the visual arts”, 10% of the net proceeds from the tour will be awarded to several promising art students. In addition, one of the homes will host "T.E.R.i," an organization that helps people with special needs live fulfilling lives. The new Media Arts Complex will house a variety of functions, serving the students of the arts hub and the campus. The Old Globe is thrilled to announce its 90th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025, an unforgettable evening under the stars on the Globe’s Copley Plaza and on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Sheryl White and Jennifer Greenfield will serve as the Celebration Co-Chairs for this one-night-only fundraising event, which honors 90 years of theatre that lives beyond the stage, with Darlene Marcos Shiley as the Honorary Chair. Guests will experience an incredible evening, complete with exquisite dining, craft cocktails, and live entertainment, featuring an electrifying performance by Tony Award-nominated actor and Grammy and Emmy Award-winning songwriter/composer Christopher Jackson. Best known for his portrayal of George Washington in the critically acclaimed Broadway sensation "Hamilton." This black-tie event begins at 5:30 p.m. with signature cocktails by Snake Oil Cocktail Company and hors d’oeuvres on the Globe’s Copley Plaza.
