Each year, The House of Lebanon hosts their annual Lawn Program. The Entertainment is provided by different folk dance groups every year that will perform Folk Dances in regional native costumes. In addition to folkloric dance, local Lebanese artist will perform tradition song, music and poetry depicting the Lebanese heritage and Culture. The House of Lebanon serves a wide selection of traditional Lebanese “Meza”. Food will include Hummus, Tabouli, Spinach Pies, Kibbeh, Falafel, stuffed Grape Leaves, Moussakaa, Kafta, Chicken and Lamb Shawarma. Kids explore ceramics and woodworking! Mon through Fri | July 28 – Aug 1 | 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Ages 7-12 years welcome! This week of Summer Camp is all about ceramics & woodworking for kids! Kids learn woodworking hand tool techniques from woodworking professional, Steffanie Dotson. A mom, woodworker, furniture maker, and Executive Director at San Diego Craft Collective, she teaches woodworking to both children and adults year-round. With a focus on safety, Steffanie creatively mentors children and fosters confidence through woodworking. Kids will also explore ceramics with visual artist-educator, Lydia Kardos. Each camper will learn and practice ceramic hand building techniques to make fun, long-lasting projects in this traditional medium full of creative flexibility. This camp is for kids, ages 7-12 years. Projects and depth of learning are matched up to the children’s age/ability. OPTIONAL | Lunch Hour Supervision If there is a camp ending as ours begins and you need your child transferred from another camp, let us know! If your child is signed up for morning and afternoon camps here at The Maac at Liberty Station (the building San Diego Craft Collective is located in–Dorothy Laub Music & Arts Center), we’re here to provide that space for your them. As part of the 32nd annual San Diego Latino Film Festival's 'Arte Latino' we are partnering with the 'Rhythm & Roots' Arts and Culture series (Charanga Night), Senses Human Bistro, and UCSD Park & Market to bring you an amazing night of film, art, music, dancing, food, drinks and a great time with friends old and new. We will start the night off with a meet the Artist Reception from 4:30-6 p.m. on the second floor next to the Digital Gym Cinema where you will see some amazing Art and meet some of the Artists who created it. We will be posting some artist information in the discussion portion of this invite. Arte Latino is curated by Andy Gonzalez (La Onda Arte Latino). This portion is FREE! Next (6-9 p.m.) you will be treated to some amazing LIVE music by 'Charanga NYS' lead by Joseph Aportela who also happens to be a featured artist at our Film Festival this year. The Rhythm & Roots series happens monthly at the Senses Human Bistro on the first floor and is about as good as it gets when it comes to Latin Jazz in San Diego. This is a unique opportunity to study with two accomplished and warmhearted artist-educators in the same course. Ken and Stephanie are both well known for their ability to help each person find their own unique drawing abilities. Each week there will be a life model. On day one, Ken will introduce a simplified approach to gesture drawing and the fundamentals of figure and head construction. During Weeks 2 and 3, Ken will go deeper into the importance of gesture drawing in relation to constructing and composing longer poses. During the final three weeks, Stephanie will continue to build on Ken’s lessons but will include longer poses that will allow students time to incorporate the basics into an actual process of drawing or painting more finished figures and portraits. Materials: You do not need to buy everything on this list. Only buy materials that relate to the medium you plan to work with, or if you are more advanced, bring your own supplies. On day one you will only need newsprint, a drawing board, vine charcoal, kneaded eraser, and one colored pastel for accents. Charcoal: Soft vine charcoal; 4B charcoal pencil; kneaded eraser; smooth newsprint; drawing board; rags or paper towels. If you prefer graphite: 2B, 4B, and 6B graphite pencils; kneaded eraser; 18” x 24” drawing pad or 18” x 24” smooth newsprint; drawing board. In this class, Jeff teaches how to efficiently begin and complete a painting. He says, “I focus on a purposeful approach to moving through blocking in an underpainting and understanding how to finish it without overworking. We try to work loose and quickly, so the process of painting is enjoyable.” Materials: Paint: (I like Winsor & Newton) Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Light (or Pale Hue), Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Titanium White. Brushes: #2, #4, #6 (flats). I recommend Robert Simmons Signet brand. Supports: Canvas panels (buy bundle of five for the best price). For class we will be working in small format, 8” x 10” or 9” x 12”. (Please no larger than 12” x 16”.) Other: palette (disposable paper palette is fine); odorless mineral spirits in solvent tank or small tight lid jar; small metal palette knife. If you already have paint and this equipment or similar, perfect. Most important is that you have the four paint colors mentioned, especially Permanent Alizarin Crimson.
