Thursday, 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. March 20 (1 Day, 4.5 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio Paint from a beautiful still life inspired by spring flowers! This is a one-day intensive workshop focusing on painting flowers alla prima. Students will learn about composition by designing and setting up a floral still life. We will take a closer look at the structure of flowers and techniques for painting them. A fun, fast study, and an excellent opportunity to develop painting skills and study floral painting in depth. The workshop will conclude with group critique. For oil painters of all levels. Materials: 9” x 12” or 11” x 14” canvas or linen panel; half-dozen brushes, white bristle flat or filbert, size 2, 4, and 6. The sculptural relief combines the dimensionality of sculpture with the compositional demands of drawing to create an exciting artistic challenge. In this course students will make three relief sculptures, each of varying depths (a low-relief, mid-relief and high-relief). We will work with the model as well as with drapery in order to study the way form can be compressed from full dimensionality into low and mid relief. The evening will begin with connected breath, coherent heart meditation, and eye gazing and then we will draw our muses. Open new channels of creativity and drop out of the thinking, judging mind, and into the body and its beautiful intuition. It’s not about being a professional artist, everyone has the capacity to create art and tap into their unique way of expressing it. 1-2 live nude figure models will begin with short poses for quick sketches and progress into longer 5-15 min held poses as we go deeper into the practice. The 103rd annual Coronado Flower Show is set to take place, April 12-13, 2025. Organized by the Coronado Floral Association (CFA), this is the largest tented flower show in the U.S. and Coronado’s longest running tradition, which includes an array of events leading up to and throughout the two-day festival. As part of “Beyond the Tent,” an effort to engage and expand the event throughout the island, and the grand prequel to the show, the beloved Coronado Flower Show kicks off with its local Homefront Judging Competition, March 28-30, where Coronado residents will prep and primp their gardens, home fronts, and store fronts in hopes of winning the elusive blue ribbons. More than 100 volunteer judges will examine and award competitive ribbons to Coronado home fronts, apartment buildings, condominium complexes, churches, businesses, and school gardens. Another prelude to the event this year, the festival will host a Family Movie Night on the eve of the event weekend, Friday, April 11 in Spreckels Park, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The main event, the Coronado Flower Show, is divided into five divisions – Horticulture, Design, Special Exhibits, Youth and Botanical Arts. The show has been a spring tradition since 1922 and is one of the largest tented flower shows in the U.S. Located at Spreckels Park, this two-day event includes landscape displays, a variety of floral competitions, educational lectures and demonstrations, live bandstand entertainment, food, a beer & wine garden with locally crafted beers, and shopping. Another special feature of the weekend is the Saturday night party, called the 1922 Club. The event includes food, drinks, and dancing all under the iconic tents of the Coronado Flower Show. The Association will also host its Annual Meeting “Feast & Fareway” on Sunday, March 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will honor the traditions and people who built and grew the organization into the celebrated community staple that it is today.
