On this 3 mile, easy-paced book club run, we explore several of the institutions and public places funded by Ellen Browning Scripps’ philanthropy. It wasn’t until 1900, when she was 61 years old, that she moved to La Jolla and would begin her philanthropic endeavors. The New York Times estimates she gave over $44 million in 2023 dollars before she died in 1932. A champion of many causes, Scripps funded institutions to support women’s education, the labor movement, and public access to science, the arts, and education. Friday, Saturday, Sunday, 9:30 a.m. –12:30 p.m. March 14, 15, and 16 (3 days, 9 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio Follow your imagination and the patterns in fabric scraps as you combine them with painted paper, cutouts, and paints. This is a chance to recycle many colorful leftovers into fantasy creations. Compositional forms will be explained with a focus on movement and repetition. During the first class meeting, Susan will demonstrate techniques for preparing paper and gluing items smoothly, and she will provide some fabric scraps for your use. She will be working on a mixed-media collage while in class. The following classes will be used to complete a larger work using still life or photographs as inspiration.   Materials: Fabric scraps, paper,* acrylic paints, 11” x 14” canvas (or larger), gesso, brushes, clear acrylic medium, copies of old photos, magazines for collage, scissors. Useful additions: Rags, scraps of foam-core, corrugated cardboard, mat board, colored pencils, soft pastels, oil pastels, India ink, watercolors. *Paper for the base of the artwork needs to be at least 100 lb. Pick no smaller than 16” x 20”. Various sizes and types of art paper (Arches cover, Stonehenge, Bristol) are good. All kinds of scrap paper and wrapping paper can be used in the mixed-media art piece. Body Rock Dance Competition, the Iconic International Dance Event, is celebrating its 25th year of production. Beginning in the year 2000, BODY ROCK has grown to a huge platform for aspiring dancers in the Global Dance Community. With its humble beginnings on a gym floor in San Diego, our passion for dance and hip hop came from the spread of dance teams up and down California. We presented one of the first dance competitions to showcase street dance crews and professional choreography teams and the rest was history! With the creation of Youtube in the mid 2000’s, our show went viral and transformed the accessibility of dance crew videos and changed how dancers were viewed in the mainstream media. We continue to influence the atmosphere of local dance creating outlets for youth, maintaining a safe and inclusive staff, and promoting authentic community relationships. We not only helped to move our dance community forward, but created a path for the next generation of dancers. Our legacy includes groups and choreographers such as the Jabbawockeez, Keone & Mari Madrid, Kyle Hanagami, The Kinjaz and Tessandra Chavez. Some crews like Korea’s “Just Jerk” have also become Viral on Youtube and TikTok with over millions of views. Annually, our show draws a crowd of +2000 people and our participants now include groups from Mexico, Germany, New Zealand, China, Australia, Korea, Russia, the Philippines and Japan! We have also expanded and have qualifier shows in Asia and Latin America. Beginner basics include learning to do the following: Use encaustic equipment (griddle, heat gun and torch) Fuse encaustic mediums for a smooth appearance Create depth by layering Embed small (dried) objects and collage elements Excavate to reveal underlying layers Materials: The $75 material fee includes wood-panel supports, R & F encaustic medium;, some R & F wax colors, heated palette, some brushes, heat guns, torches, some collage materials, images, things to embed; mark-making tools, gloves, scissors.
