The production brings a fresh, dynamic energy to this beloved classic while honoring the rich tradition of Gilbert and Sullivan’s razor-sharp satire and high-spirited hijinks. "The Pirates of Penzance" follows the story of Frederic, a young man mistakenly apprenticed to a band of soft-hearted pirates. As he completes his term of service, he vows to dedicate himself to eradicating piracy—until a technicality binds him to the pirates indefinitely. Along the way, he encounters the beautiful Mabel, her eccentric father, Major-General Stanley, and a bumbling squad of police officers who are more charming than effective. San Diego New Music invites composers to apply to the Emerging Composers Workshop in spring 2025. In this program, students will participate in a three-part seminar with San Diego State University (SDSU) music composition and theory professor, Dr. Texu Kim. The workshop will culminate in a public reading session of new works by selected high school students on Wednesday, May 7, at the Athenaeum Art Center in Logan Heights. This workshop is free to attend. This concert is underwritten by the Sleet Music Performance Fund in memory of San Diegans Don Sleet (jazz trumpeter), Marshall Sleet (band leader and composer), Anna Mae Sleet (vocalist), and Jeffery Sleet (concert cellist). San Diego New Music pitched the idea of a concert series devoted to modern music and 20th-century classics at the Athenaeum. The concerts of modern music perfectly complement the exhibitions of modern art held in the Athenaeum’s galleries. In 1996, San Diego New Music presented its first season. The series was called "Noise at the Library," and the ensemble would later adopt the name, as well. (2024) Sally Gearhart was a charismatic trailblazer who led the charge in the 1970s and '80s lesbian feminist movement, leaving an indelible mark on women’s rights and LGBTQ+ equality. A brilliant and magnetic superstar, she inspired thousands with her unapologetic activism and visionary leadership. Yet, by 2008, her pivotal contributions had been all but forgotten, her legacy notably absent from the Hollywood film Milk. How could history overlook Sally Gearhart? This is the story of a revolutionary figure who cannot be erased. SPECIAL GUEST: Ondine Rarey Ondine is a filmmaker, editor, and writer. Her documentary FOOLS AND HEROES was a Grimme-Preis nominee (the German equivalent of an Emmy), airing on ARTE in France as well as stateside on PBS. She has edited well over a dozen documentary features and shorts, including "Now en Español" (for PBS), "A Great Ride," "Who Will Write Our History" and, “Rebel Hearts” an official selection at Sundance 2021. She has also worked on multiple TV series, including KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS and ALIEN ENCOUNTERS.
