Kumiko is an ancient Japanese woodworking technique of assembling individual pieces of wood, without the use of nails, into geometric patterns. Kumiko has been used in constructing shoji screens, latticework, and other decorative elements in traditional Japanese architecture. In this workshop, students will learn the basics of kumiko, including the use of hand tools to cut the pieces and assemble the frame. Each student will work on a small project to finish and take home. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here. Plein air painting is an excellent way to observe color, light, and aerial perspective. This workshop focuses on composition and color mixing with a limited palette. Each day will begin with a demo and conclude with a group critique. The historic Spanish Baroque architecture and beautiful gardens of Balboa Park are an inspiring and congenial place to paint outdoors. All levels are welcome in this workshop. We will meet up in the Plaza Panama in front of the Timken Art Museum. Materials: portable easel; four 8” x 10” or 6” x 8”, good quality canvas boards; half-dozen brushes, white bristle flat or filbert, # 2, #4, #6. With a Master’s in Social Psychology and degrees in Teaching, Health Promotion, and Organizational Development, Claude is fluent in English, French, German, and Italian, and continues to perfect her Spanish. - Kitty Morse, an award-winning author born in Casablanca, Morocco, intertwines personal history and culinary heritage in Bitter Sweet: A Wartime Journal and Heirloom Recipes from Occupied France. Inspired by family documents discovered after her mother’s passing in 2017, the memoir delves into her great-grandfather’s journal detailing the German advance in Le Grand Est (Alsace/Lorraine) in 1940, and her great-grandmother’s notebooks containing 65 heirloom recipes. The story unfolds in Nancy and "Châlons-en-Champagne," blending the cuisine bourgeoise of her Ashkenazi ancestors with poignant family history. Kitty’s maternal great-grandmother, Blanche Lévy-Neymarck, perished in Auschwitz, leaving a legacy of resilience, memory, and culinary artistry. From the organizers: Quint Gallery is pleased to present a new suite of paintings made by Monique van Genderen since a summer stay in Sea Ranch, a beacon of modernist architecture located on Highway 1 in Sonoma County and set between the coast and the Gualala river. In addition to van Genderen's paintings, there will be a short film and documentation of the central painting in progress by Lile Kvantaliani, and an original poem by Jennifer Moxley, responding to the film. "Three works that were made for each other. In support of each other. In reaction to each other. First the painting, then its documentation, then documentation on the person that made the painting. Then the poem, it’s logic is modular, one of response and repetition. The poet mixed up the lines and let the images guide her. Precise and timed, tuned to a moment in mid-August. But anyone can do it. You can do it too. You can say the lines in response to the images, the soundtrack, the person. Two friends from different generations went on a trip. They had in mind to make their own works, using each other’s company, in support of each other’s work. The film was to be about the death of an artist. Maybe it still is. The paintings are also a process of response and repetition. They have images that obstinately repeat, putting the pressure on to remember something that looks like something else. The order is embedded in the process, and the process becomes transparent, closing the loop to make the circle.
