Explore natural dye color! Sunday, June 1, 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. In this 2-hour workshop, explore eco-bundle dye, the art of infusing natural pigments onto fibers. Join fiber artist Jeanine Ertl and share in the ephemeral, mindful and magical beauty of this serendipitous dye process. You will learn about the gentle, fleeting nature of a diverse array of botanical and kitchen dyes while completing the process from start to finish—mordanting bundling, steaming and finishing. Each student will create two unique silk or cotton squares or scarves. Colors will shift and change before your eyes as you place natural dyestuffs, steam, unroll, and enjoy! And while bundles steam, we will talk about exploring the potential dyes in our homes, gardens and local area. Students are welcome to bring in their favorite flowers to explore using in your bundle. Each participant will leave with a booklet on the Eco-Bundle Dye process and two bundle dyed pieces. Ages 12+ years welcome, or 8+ years with an adult. If adult and child would like to make their own pieces, please purchase two spaces. To Honor Mental Health Week 2025, Oceanside International Film Festival invites the artistic communities of Oceanside & Beyond to attend "THE ROAD BACK': A Mental Health Film Series for the Mind, Body & Soul. This Special Film Showcase In-Partnership with the Oceanside Theatre Company Celebrates the Vital Role of the Arts in the Healing Process, Mental Well-Being and the Resilience of the Soul. As well as the importance of having a Community Base in doing so. This 80 Minute Showcase is to be followed by a Q&A Panel Discussion and features the following short films: "ALONE TOGETHER" - After breaking off their budding relationship, Julian and Devon struggle to return to their lonely lives apart. With a unique storytelling device, the audience is able to view two characters' stories at once. Directed by Peter Murphy | Rochester, NY | Animation | 10 Minutes "WILD SEA" - "Wild Sea" delves into the life of Jeff Allen, a trailblazing figure in the world of Sea Kayaking. The film traces Jeff's journey from his formative years to his role as one of the foremost Sea Kayak guides and coaches of our time. As we accompany Jeff on his odyssey, we are immersed in the depths of his past, including his experiences in the military and are granted access to his own personal traumas. The film illuminates the transformative power of the sea as Jeff finds purpose and healing through his connection with the ocean. In particular, his 2004 Japan circumnavigation serves as a poignant testament to the cathartic influence of the ocean environment on his life. Join us for the next installment of our Signature Event Series featuring distinguished alumni authors Sarina Dahlan ’98 and S.B. Divya MEng ’00. Drawing from their latest works, “Freeset” and “Loka,” the authors will explore how speculative fiction can address timely societal issues, including identity, memory and technology. The conversation will be moderated and will take place on Wednesday, May 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Seuss Room at Geisel Library. A UC San Diego alumna with degrees in psychology and visual arts, her writing explores memory, identity and the cost of utopia. S.B. Divya, MEng ’00 is a Hugo- and Nebula-nominated author whose work bridges hard science and imaginative storytelling. Stretch Affect, known for their concierge physical therapy and movement optimization, is throwing a Grand Opening Fundraiser this Sunday May 18 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at their new 10,000-square-foot facility in Sorrento Mesa (9945 Pacific Heights Blvd, San Diego, CA 92121). The event aims to raise $50,000 for the Challenged Athletes Foundation and will feature a Paralympian guest speaker, and a live auction boasting signed sports memorabilia, training packages, travel getaways, and more to further help propel fundraising efforts. The fundraiser will also include demonstrations of wheelchair tennis and racing, and hands-on access to state-of-the-art fitness and recovery technology—including DEXA scans, 3-D motion capture from Kinotek, and interactive showcases by Blazepod, Gibbons, Matrix, and Hyperice. Families can enjoy a kid-friendly zone with inflatables and games, while attendees can explore supercars from Fast Lane Drive, sample food from Glass Box, and receive water bottles from Fill-It-Forward to support clean water initiatives worldwide. The series continues on June 11 with former San Diego residents vocalist Gillian Margot and Geoffrey Keezer (piano), featuring music from their eponymous new duo album. For this Athenaeum date, they are joined by Ben Williams on bass and San Diego jazz hero Peter Sprague on guitar. With an exquisite voice, a disarmingly wide vocal range, and a style that is deeply rooted in the tradition of the great jazz vocalists, Margot possesses a gift of storytelling and stunning lyrical delivery. A native of Toronto, Canada, Margot studied under a generation of jazz legends including Oscar Peterson, Freddy Cole, Carol Welsman, and Norman Simmons. Keezer is a GRAMMY-winning pianist, composer, arranger, and producer based in New York City, where he first moved in 1989 to become the final pianist with the legendary Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Keezer has toured and recorded with a galaxy of stars including Ray Brown, Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Sting, and Christian McBride. Partners in music since 2014 and in life since 2016, both Margot and Keezer share a predisposition to address, in Margot’s words, “different styles, genres, or grooves and feels, and harmonic implications,” an attitude that accounts for the capacious range of repertoire in their performances. A spirit of freedom judiciously balanced with collective consciousness pervades their recent recording, as Keezer and Margot mind meld on a half-dozen “Standard” standards along with authoritatively interpreted songs by Hermeto Pascoal, Peter Gabriel, Chick Corea, and Donald and Dorothy Brown.
