Together, we will create magical, glitter paper lanterns using parchment paper, string, and cellophane, that will brighten and warm winter nights. Art Activity: Create paper lanterns filled with color and light. Schedule: At 11 a.m., explore Light and Space works in MCASD’s permanent collection through a kid friendly tour. From 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., enjoy music by a local DJ, get cozy in the book nook, sketch with water, and get book recommendations from the LIbrarian on the Go. At Noon and 1 p.m., sit and experience the soothing sounds of crystal bowls as they quiet your mind and lead you into a relaxed and introspective state. At 12:30 p.m., listen to stories, songs, and rhymes in Storytime with Librarian on the Go. *Museum admission is free from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. for all visitors, with Play Day offerings happening between 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. No RSVPs are required for Play Day admission. About Play Day Play Day is a monthly event at the Museum designed for families to explore art together. Activities include special tours, hands-on projects, and at-your-own-pace guides. Centered at the Conrad Prebys Learning Center and extending into the galleries and terraces, each Play Day offers new and engaging ways to experience the artworks on display.   • Learn to Warp & Weave! From 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (w/1 hr lunch break) Learn the ancient fiber craft of weaving your own fabric using a sustainably harvested wooden Rigid Heddle Loom and soft natural fibers. In his hands-on workshop, instructor Jeanine Ertl will teach you everything you need to know to warp and weave on your own. This class is perfect for anyone who’s been curious about weaving beyond a lap loom and wants to learn the warping and weaving processes. We’ll dive into fiber & fabric and demystify the process of getting set up (otherwise known as warping a loom), weaving, and finally, finishing and removing a woven fiber good from the loom! And, you’ll go home with handwoven fabric in-hand. Length of the final piece will depend on the individual’s own pace. In this workshop you’ll learn: * How a Rigid Heddle Loom works; * How to Plan a Textile (e.g. sett, basic pattern & choosing fiber, etc.) * How to Warp a Rigid Heddle; * How to Weave; * How to Remove your Woven; * And, How to Finish a freshly Handwoven Textile. All materials to warp & weave a sample included for use. If you’re interested in learning to warp and weave on your own rigid heddle loom, please email Instructor Jeanine Ertl advance. No experience necessary. Ages 14+ welcome! OPTION: Students will weave on Ashford looms. The instructor will have a variety of Ashford looms (Sample It and Knitters Looms) present for purchase in class. We're fundraising to pack 10,000 high-protein meals for the San Diego Food Bank to be distributed to San Diegans experiencing food insecurity. California food banks are seeing more families requesting food assistance now than before the pandemic, and fewer donations of food. Our goal is to provide thousands of shelf-stable, protein-rich meals to the San Diego Food Bank to help them meet the demand for healthy food options. You can learn more and contribute to our fundraiser in partnership with The Outreach Program and Old Mission Rotary here. With the help of Old Mission Rotary and a matching grant from Rotary District 5340, we’ll be able to pack over 10,000 meals if we reach our goal of $1,450. Any additional funds raised our goal will go to the Mission Valley Evening Rotary Foundation (MVE Rotary Foundation). The MVE Rotary Foundation is the grant giving arm of Mission Valley Evening Rotary which provides funds to local and international organizations.
