  • "... one of the most brilliant and imaginative contemporary composers of mainstream jazz… stimulating and emotive original music with a rare blend of sophistication and organic spontaneity.” -Chicago Jazz Magazine “There's nothing there to get in the way of the music: no bar, no restaurant, no blaring TV's, no club scene - only music. It's unpretentious, comfortable and casual, and makes for a very satisfying listening experience.” -Chuck Perrin, owner of Dizzy’s since 2000 San Diego, CA – Grammy Award-winning multi-genre trumpeter and composer Charlie Porter will be performing with his band featuring Eric Scott Reed at Dizzy’s on September 15th at 8 p.m. While others may have a similar pedigree, Charlie is one of the few who is truly infinitely creative in the way he manages color and space. Using his own compositions as vehicles, he briskly moves through a series of moods and emotions in a way that only he can, and his sound is so pure that it will vibrate you to your core. Charlie first cut his teeth on the New York jazz scene in the late ’90s, while simultaneously studying classical trumpet performance at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of famed trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. Though he has recorded many albums as a side-musician, Porter has recorded three albums to date, as a leader, that have been garnering high praise, with three more to be released in 2024 (Live at Blue Llama, Cipher, and Portland Sketches). His 2019 release Immigration Nation was voted one of the best albums of the year by DownBeat. Charlie has toured the world as a side-man and band-leader in jazz and also as a classical soloist and chamber musician, performing and recording with many notable musicians and groups over the last twenty years ranging from jazz greats including Joe Zawinul, Winard Harper, Mike Longo, Paquito D’Rivera, Ira Sullivan, Aaron Diehl, Mike Holober, Jimmy Greene, Jay Thomas, David Berger, Charli Persip and Chuck Israels to classical artists such as Simone Dinnerstein, Sarah Chang, and Joyce DiDonato as well as world-music greats Goran Bregovic, Marcel Khalife, and Kim Duksoo, among many others. He is also a founding member of the Grammy-nominated electro-acoustic Absolute Ensemble, directed by Kristjan Jarvi. Charlie’s collaboration on opera star Joyce DoDonato’s crossover album “Songplay” earned him a Grammy Award for 2019. Pianist Eric Scott Reed has been a vital figure on the music scene for over 25 years. His musical journey began on Philadelphia's church scene, continued through formal training at South Philly’s Settlement Music School, and expanded in Los Angeles and New York, where he established himself among jazz greats. Known for his versatility, Reed has led numerous ensembles, performed solo, composed, produced, and educated aspiring musicians. He has collaborated with legends such as Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Buster Williams, and Wynton Marsalis. Including his latest release Black, Brown, and Beige, Reed has an extensive discography of twenty-seven recordings as a leader that highlight his innovative interpretations and original compositions. As an educator, he has influenced many young talents at prestigious institutions. Recently returning to Los Angeles, Reed balances performing, mentoring, and exploring his spiritual and artistic evolution. His work remains a testament to his dedication to jazz and his continuous search for creative expression.
