It is very fitting to end the series by focusing on the work of Kendrick Bangs Kellogg, the San Diego native who recently passed away. He worked with both Sim Bruce Richards and Frederick Liebhardt before going on to design some of the region’s most dramatic buildings. About the presenters: Presenters include Dr. Mark Hargreaves, Rector of St. James-by-the-Sea in La Jolla, Hallie Swenson an architectural designer in San Diego, Keith York, an architectural writer and real estate agent specializing in architect designed homes, and independent curator Dave Hampton. Hargreaves, author of "The Sacred Architecture of Irving J. Gill." (2023), was inspired by a lifelong interest in the visual arts to complete a master's degree at The National Gallery and King's College in London on the topic of Christianity and the arts. Since moving to San Diego, he has had a keen interest in capturing the architectural history of San Diego. Hallie Swenson studied traditional architecture and urbanism in England at University of Buckingham, the architectural history of England at the University of Cambridge, King's College, and Roman architecture at the University of Notre Dame, Rome. She contributed an essay to Clive Aslet’s book The Academy, which celebrates the work of renowned traditionalist architect John Simpson. Dave Hampton is an independent curator focused on San Diego’s postwar art and architecture community. His book, "San Diego's Craft Revolution," accompanied a 2011 exhibition at Mingei International Museum as part of the first Getty-sponsored Pacific Standard Time initiative. Dave and Gayle Kauihou live in Ken Kellogg’s 1967 Ledbetter residence. Tickets: $16/21 The lecture will be in person at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. With 60 hours and 10-weeks in residence, our selected Resident Artists delved into research and development of new works. S P A C E Pro Showcase: March 28 & 29 at 1100 Kettner Blvd, San Diego About the Artists and Their Works Radhika Karandikar (she/her) is a Bharatanatyam dancer based in San Diego with a deep passion for performing, teaching, and collaborating. She holds an MFA in Bharatanatyam and is an instructor at Abinaya Arts Academy, also teaching students online nationwide. For over 8 years, she has been a core dancer with Sankhya Dance Company in Mumbai, under the mentorship of founder Vaibhav Arekar. Trained in Indian classical music, her dance is enriched by its nuances. Radhika has performed at prestigious dance festivals across India and Europe and continues to create, collaborate, and perform innovative works in the United States. Radhika Karandikar’s Project: The song of Life - an exploration of Haiku and Tanka verses through Bharatanatyam This experimental work traces the story of a woman in her twilight years looking back at her life, marked by love and loss, trying hard to break the chain of generational trauma that the women in her family faced. Using Haiku and Tanka as the literary base, Radhika has endeavoured to manifest these beautiful verses through the audio-visual form of the Indian classical dance Bharatanatyam. Working dynamically with multiple art forms like, the western violin, the Indian tabla, spoken word(poetry) and projection(multimedia), 'The Song of Life' takes the audience on a journey through space and time, through the rich storytelling aspect of Bharatanatyam. This would be an immersive experience for the viewers owing to the use of multiple spaces in the showcase. Poetry - Kala Ramesh (@kalaramesh8), Movement exploration and choreography - Radhika Karandikar (@radhikakarandikar27), Sound design and percussion - Rohit Panchakshari (@anandi_tabla), Music composition and violin - Jesus Cervantes (@jesuscervantesmusic) Isabel Desmet (she/her) began her dance training at 13, focusing mainly on jazz and contemporary. She fell in love with modern dance during her time at San Diego Mesa and City Colleges. Isabel has a bachelor’s degree in Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley. At Berkeley, she trained in the dance department with Latanya Tigner in Horton and Talawa techniques, and with James Graham in Gaga movement language. Now, in addition to choreographing, Isabel is also a dancer for San Diego Dance Theater and teaches contemporary, jazz, modern, ballet, tap and hip hop dance to teens and adults throughout San Diego. Isabel Desmet’s Project: During this residency, Isabel Desmet has developed a work focused on reconnecting with the body through movement and fostering a deeper connection to our primal, animal nature. She explores how dance can help reclaim bodily awareness in a society driven by productivity and efficiency. Her research culminates in a duet inspired by animals, such as birds and spiders, with the goal of exploring how humans can reconnect with more instinctual movement, less influenced by modern norms. While Isabel has created movements based on animal behavior using video footage of various species, the work remains distinctly human. The Coronado Public Library and Coronado Art Commission invite you to step into the director’s chair with a hands-on film class with award winning producer and director, Tony Perri. In this collaborative class, aspiring filmmakers will work together to create a short film that will be submitted to the Coronado Island Film Festival. Participants will learn scripting, direction and every aspect of pre-production, production and post-production. The course will also provide opportunities to get-together outside of class to apply their new-found knowledge into the practical application of on-location filming, directing scenes, how to work a camera, light a scene and record audio. The team will learn the basics of editing and all post production tasks as well as how to distribute and market the final short film and process required for submitting the movie to film festivals. The course is eight weeks long and participants are encouraged to attend as many sessions as possible as the class will be working on a collaborative project. Classes will cover: Film Types and Production Overview: Through watching different types of short films, the class will decide what kind of movie it will produce. Story ideas will be discussed along with how to script the film, create storyboards and the production logistics needed to make the movie per their script, the storyboards created and the vision of production team. The Production Team: The roles of each of the following positions are explained and each class member will have the opportunity to work at every job and/or focus on specific roles which may interest them. Scripting, Storyboards, Casting and Pre-Production: The team will create a shooting script and storyboards. Through this, they may decide on filming locations, how to cast the movie, production planning as well as the equipment, crew and props needed for the on-location filming. Directing, Producing and Cinematography: How to direct both action and actors is reviewed along with the roles of the producer and cinematographer. Examples of great directing and cinematography are shown. The Art of Filming, Lighting and Audio Production: Scenes which can be filmed at or near the Library will be produced. Participants will learn how to operate different types of cameras, lights and microphones. Music, Special Effects, Editing and Post Production: As we watch various films, the class begins to understand the importance of music and how it fits into the post production process. They learn how to mix music, scenes and special effects in order to create the story they wish to share with the viewers. Mastering the Film and Distribution: Upon completion of post production, the class will discover the art of color-correcting the video, sweetening the sound and preparing the final film for screenings. The team will learn how to distribute the film digitally and submit it to film festivals. About Tony Perri: Tony Perri began his broadcast and film career at the Walt Disney Company as a producer, director and broadcast journalist. After Disney, Mr. Perri became producer and director at the nationally syndicated TV show, PM Magazine and the long-running local version at KPIX-TV (CBS), Evening Magazine. Tony went on to form the TV, film and digital media production company, Surf's Up Studios. His most recent films include the documentary, "School of Thought" with David Lynch, Paul McCartney and John Hagelin. His feature film, "Serotonin Rising" starring the Dalai Lama and Deepak Chopra won the prestigious "Audience Choice Award" at the Estes Park Film Festival. "Serotonin Rising" sold out its world premiere at the Vail Film Festival where actor and Vail Film Festival award-winner. Mr. Perri is an executive producer and director with Surf's Up Studios, which produces movies, music videos, webisodes, news reels and all forms of social and digital media. Tony also teaches a workshop he developed called "Backpack Journalism" at the University of California at San Diego, Digital Arts Center. He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado where he teaches documentary production, TV production, on-air technique and broadcast journalism.
