Senior Field CorrespondentSenior Field Correspondent Devin Browne (Phoenix) was born and raised in a small suburb of Los Angeles known nationally for its natural disasters (fires, mudslides, and earthquakes, mainly). In 2008, she moved into the heart of the city, to one of L.A.'s most bustling immigrant portals. There she launched MacArthurParkMedia.com, a site about how the American experience now starts. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 2005, and later studied radio at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine. In Arizona, as in most states, kids who don’t speak English well are put into separate classes to teach them the language. The number of kids in these classes has shrunk considerably over the last five years. Arizona’s Department of Education attributes the shrinkage to its model of instruction. Others claim the drop has more to do with a testing process designed to push students out of English classes before they are ready. The U.S. Department of Justice is currently investigating the claim.
