Advocates demand transparency following in-custody death in North County

Community advocates rallied Thursday in front of the Vista Detention Facility to protest the latest in-custody death that happened Sunday.

They want more oversight on arrest procedures. Advocates say they want to see some transparency because San Diego County is on track to match 2022, the deadliest year for in-custody deaths.

By March 2022, the county had six deaths. Right now, there have been four in-custody deaths.
KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
